GRADUATE RESEARCH FACULTY

Research faculty may apply to the Graduate School for membership in the Graduate Faculty.  They will hold a special category of this body known as “Graduate Research Faculty.”  The following provisions pertain to their appointment, term, and responsibilities.

Appointment

Graduate research faculty status can be recommended for those individuals who are needed to support research and programs sponsored by the university.  The faculty sponsor or supervisor must recommend an individual for such appointment to a department chair or center director.  To be eligible to hold research graduate status, the individual must meet the criteria established for graduate faculty membership in the host department or center.  The applicant must complete the standard graduate faculty form and submit it to the reporting dean and to the Graduate School for review and approval as is the currently approved Graduate Council practice.

Term

Research faculty approved for Research Graduate Faculty status will be appointed for an initial term of three years.  Prior to the end of the third year, the individual will be notified by the Graduate School that his/her term of appointment is ending.  At that time, the individual may reapply for a standard five-year term.

Roles/Responsibilities

Graduate research faculty may serve on appropriate academic unit graduate student supervisory committees.  They cannot serve as sole chairs of graduate supervisory committees, but they may serve as co-chairs as long as the other co-chair is a tenured or tenure-track graduate faculty member at the university.  Graduate research faculty may also teach graduate level courses (500 and above) if approved by the chair of the academic unit and the appropriate dean.  Other responsibilities and duties will be determined on an individual basis pending an agreement between the academic unit or center and the dean of the Graduate School.
