Dr. John P. Bennett became the president of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance at the organizations national convention in Baltimore, Maryland Saturday, March 17, 2007. John is the second North Carolinian to serve in this position since it began in 1885, 121 years ago. The other person to serve in this position was Dr. LeRoy T. Walker former chancellor at North Carolina Central and the only Emeritus President of the United States Olympic Committee. The American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance is the largest and oldest health promotion organization in the world representing about 50,000 people in the United States. John is a professor in the Department of Health and Applied Human Sciences at The University of North Carolina Wilmington where he has been a faculty member since 1992.
