New Bern, NC Firefighter Fitness Assessment

Several exercise science students traveled to New Bern, NC for 3 days to assess the fitness status of the New Bern firefighters. Within a span of 3 days, the students evaluated the fitness status of 48 firefighters. The comprehensive fitness assessment included a treadmill exercise test (cardiovascular fitness), handgrip dynamometer (upper body muscular strength), push ups (upper body muscular endurance), curl ups (upper body muscular endurance), and sit-and-reach (flexibility). Dr. Wayland Tseh, Mr. Christian Barnes, and Mr. Adam Corbin are extremely grateful to Jillian Cowan, Blake Crabb, Rachel Lambeth, Elissa Rumney, Lauren Segur, Diana Shattuck, Jason Smith, Jessica Stallings, Michael Tarpey, and Allison Weatherington for their professionalism and effort during the success of the fitness assessment.

This is the second year that exercise science faculty and students have assessed the fitness levels of firefighters. Last year a group performed the same test battery with firefighters from Wake Forest. See: http://www.uncw.edu/hahs/wakeforestfitness.htm
