Ludwig van Beethoven's Seventh Symphony,
Op. 92 in A Major
Movement II Allegretto
(Arranged for Flute Quintet)
A Scholarly Edition
ABSTRACT
For
my honors project, I chose to arrange the second movement (the Allegretto) from Ludwig van Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony, a piece beloved by
audiences and considered to be one of his masterpieces. I selected to arrange this movement for flute
quintet because Beethoven, like many Classical composers, did not favor the
flute with many of solo and chamber works.
As a flutist for thirteen years, I wanted to produce an arrangement for
my instrument that preserved Beethoven’s true intentions and could be
beneficial to student and professional flutists alike.
In
addition to the arrangement itself, I conducted research on Beethoven, his Seventh Symphony, and the flute in the
Classical era. In this paper, I discuss
flute repertoire and the Classical composers’ assessment of the flute, analyze
the Classical era flute, and defend why Beethoven’s Allegretto is a suitable piece to arrange for flute quintet.
