The University of North Carolina Wilmington is seeking qualified applicants for a temporary Career Development Counselor. The position will be 30-40 hours per week and will last through April 30th, 2012.

SUMMARY OF POSITION

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Developmental Counseling

•  Work with individual student and alumni clients, helping them to explore their work values, personality preferences, career interests, transferable skills and learning outcomes, and how those can suggest and support academic and career decision making.

•  Administer and interpret appropriate career assessment instruments to assist student and alumni clients in their academic and career development planning.

•  Utilize professional referrals for student and alumni clients, when appropriate.

Instruction & Instructional Support

•  Facilitate involvement of faculty in activities such as targeted class offerings, classroom instruction, special seminars, academic projects built into class syllabus, and academically targeted career events.

Program Development & Delivery

•  Serve as a member of the UNCW Career Center team through participation in the full activities of the Center.  Actively participate as a partner with other Career Center staff in serving all UNCW students, first year students through alumni.

•  Provide career development, internship, career networking, and employment assistance to students, new graduates, and alumni.  Service formats include individual counseling sessions, classroom instruction, workshops, special events, and resource material.  Counseling services include the use of career assessment instruments and resource materials. Topics include but are not limited to academic and career planning, career assessment, career information and exploration, resume writing, job interviewing, internships, job search strategies, preparing for graduate school, and employer expectations.

QUALIFICATIONS

•  Master’s degree required in counseling, counseling psychology, career development, student affairs, higher education or closely related field.  Prefer two to five years proven experience in collegiate career or student services.  Solid track record of success in creatively producing and marketing programs and services for college students.

•  Highly effective written and verbal communication skills, as demonstrated in individual counseling sessions, classroom and other group presentations, and publications.

•  Ability to establish rapport with students, faculty, administrators, employers and staff.

•  Ability to work independently and creatively to develop solutions, resolve differences, and contribute effectively to the Career Center team.

•  Proficient with technology to support innovative educational programs and services as well as administrative functions.

•  Demonstrated personal and professional commitment to diversity.

•  Prefer, but not require, designation as a National Certified Counselor (NCC) by the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC).
