The University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) announces an exceptional opportunity for an experienced advancement professional with a proven record in comprehensive fundraising and successful campaign leadership to serve as Vice Chancellor for University Advancement (VCUA).  Building on the career of a highly successful retiring Vice Chancellor and the successful completion of the university’s largest comprehensive campaign, the incumbent, working closely with the Chancellor, will develop and execute an innovative philanthropic strategy for the future.  Reporting to the Chancellor, the VCUA provides senior leadership in areas of major and principal gifts, corporate and foundation relations, planned giving, donor relations and stewardship, alumni relations, research and prospect management, advancement services and university events.  The VCUA serves as the Executive Director of the UNCW Foundation and is a member of the Senior Leadership Team.   The VCUA leads the activities of the University Board of Visitors and is the senior staff person to the Board of Trustees External Affairs Committee.  The VCUA represents the Chancellor and the University in UNC General Administration activities regarding advancement. 

The VCUA will develop creative and highly collaborative relationships and provide overall philanthropic leadership support to the Department of Athletics, the Office of Community Partnerships, the UNCW Center for Entrepreneurship and the UNCW CREST Research Park, which includes the Center for Marine Science, the center for Marine Biotechnology North Carolina (MARBIONC), and the Shellfish Research Hatchery.  The VCUA will collaborate closely with the Provost and the Deans to create a culture of philanthropy in the academic division. 

Three important opportunities await the new VCUA.  (1)  The university is in the very early stages of developing its advancement strategy for the future.  The VCUA will lead these efforts in collaboration with campaign counsel and the Chancellor.  (2) The Chancellor and the Board of Trustees have approved a new funding model for the Advancement Division.  Working closely with the VC for Business Affairs, the VCUA will advance this new model.  (3) The Advancement Division will undertake a full upgrade of its information technology systems in the coming year, a process that will have to be carefully coordinated with business and academic affairs. 

Minimum Qualifications: Significant experience in development work including a record of success in cultivating, soliciting and closing major gifts;  demonstrated experience in prospect research and stewardship; demonstrated management experience commensurate with the needs of leading a large, complex division; collaborative work style; exceptional communications skills; understanding of the university shared governance environment; experience in information technology related to fund raising; understanding of the importance of alumni; Bachelor’s degree required.

Exceptional candidates will be passionate, innovative, self-directed individuals with a love of higher education, and possess an understanding of budgets, endowments, business analytics, and personnel management and productivity. The successful candidate will be a visionary with a strategic leadership style that embraces accountability.  The ability to network extensively, motivate colleagues, organize those not experienced in fund-raising and working with constituent groups regionally and nationally is highly desirable.
