The College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) seeks a dynamic, creative, and visionary academic leader for the position of Director of the School of Nursing (SON). The position will ideally be filled by January 2014, however, the start date is negotiable. The Director of the SON serves as the chief academic officer of the School. Reporting to the Dean of the College of Health and Human Services, the Director is expected to lead the SON to national prominence. The Director provides leadership and vision for the School; sets the standard for intellectual engagement; advocates for the School’s needs and programs; supports and mentors faculty members in their teaching, professional development, service and intellectual contributions; supports innovative means of delivering academic programs; encourages collaboration across the College and University; builds relationships within the community and the profession; ensures the fiscal integrity of the School; and assists the Dean in fundraising and resource development.
Applicants must hold a terminal degree in nursing or related discipline, with a distinguished teaching record, significant professional service, and a scholarly record of research publications, presentations, and external funding suitable for tenure at the rank of full professor. A master’s degree in nursing is required if the doctorate is not in nursing. Strong communication, management and leadership skills; demonstrated success in teambuilding and faculty/staff development and mentoring, with a strong commitment to shared governance, and a successful record of effective administrative leadership are compulsory. The successful candidate must be an active scholar with a history of successful external funding for research and/or service projects. Evidence of community involvement, experience in healthcare settings, and the capability to lead change within the academic setting is necessary. Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated experience with interprofessional and/or transdisciplinary approaches to education within health and human services; have national visibility in the profession of nursing; have demonstrated knowledge of clinical research; and have demonstrated experience in fiscal management, advancement, innovative teaching approaches, and effective team work with administrators of different disciplines.
The School of Nursing has an outstanding legacy of serving the people of southeastern N.C. through education, scholarship and service. The SON is dedicated to excellence in the development of health care professionals through in-depth education, professional partnerships, applied research, regional engagement and community outreach and impact. The SON is located in the three year old McNeill Hall, a state-of-the-art facility that includes offices, classrooms, a large lecture hall, computer laboratories, student services areas and learning commons, and the Simulation Learning Center. Through the Simulation Learning Center, we strive to prepare students for 21st century nursing practice through the use of technology. The Simulation Learning Center uses high, medium and low fidelity human patient simulators as a teaching and learning tool for nursing education. Through the use of simulation, we strive to create a realistic environment and a powerful learning experience that promotes cognitive, affective, physical and social development of the student as well as the incorporation of interprofessional collaborative experiences for students across the degree programs in the College.
The SON offers the following degrees programs: BS Nursing, MS in Nursing (Family Nurse Practitioner), RN/BS Nursing, BS Clinical Research, MS in Clinical Research and Product Development, and Post Master Certificates in Family Nurse Practice and Nurse Education. A Doctorate of Nursing Practice is in the planning phase. Over 400 undergraduate and 80 graduate students are enrolled in programs within the SON. Currently, the SON has 35 full-time faculty. During the recently completed capital campaign, “The Campaign for UNCW: Soaring to Greatness,” $3,984,238.00 was raised to support programs, scholarships and establishment of three Distinguished Professorships, two of which have recently been filled with outstanding faculty.
The College of Health and Human Services was created in July 2010 to provide UNCW with a new mechanism to link and focus its health-related research, professional continuing education, and health knowledge dissemination and application. In the formative stage of development, the CHHS is currently home to three professional schools: School of Health and Applied Human Sciences, School of Nursing, and School of Social Work. The College seeks to be nationally recognized for its inter-professional and collaborative approach to enhancing the health and quality of life of individuals, families, and communities in southeastern North Carolina and beyond.
