Center for Marine Science (CMS)

Vacancy #28E137

The Center for Marine Science (CMS) at the University of North Carolina Wilmington announces a Postdoctoral Fellowship under the direction of Professor Jeffrey Wright.  The position is in the area of marine natural product chemistry of cultured microbes, and is initially funded for two years.  Continued funding is subject to grant renewal pending availability of funds.  The successful applicant will have a PhD. in chemistry or a closely related field and will have demonstrated ability in the isolation and structure elucidation of natural products.  Skills in conducting and interpreting experiments in NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, IR, and UV as applied to structure elucidation are essential.  The successful candidate must have demonstrated abilities in the application of various types of chromatography to purify natural products, the ability to work independently and must possess excellent communication skills.  CMS houses state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation including NMR (500MHz), LC/Q, LC/Qtrap, LC/Qtof, and numerous HPLC/UV/ELS/RI units. The work will involve the isolation of natural products from a unique collection of cultured phytoplankton grown on a large scale, many with known but uncharted toxin- or bioactive-producing capabilities.  The group provides a rich environment with expertise in natural product isolation, cultivation of marine microbes, and ecological studies of marine systems.  We are also interested in exploring biotechnological applications of our discoveries.

Applicants should include in their curriculum vitae past research experience and future goals.  The curriculum vitae along with a letter of interest and contact information for three professional references, should be addressed to Dr Ryan Van Wagoner, Chair, Search Committee, and attached to the online application – not e-mailed, mailed or faxed.  Attachments must be in either Mircrosoft Word or Adobe PDF format.  Priority consideration will be given to online applications received by September 28, 2007 but will be accepted until the position is filled.
