The University of North Carolina Wilmington invites applications for the position of Distinguished Professor of Jazz in the Department of Music. (http://www.uncw.edu/music). The UNCW Department of Music has 13 full-time and 10 part-time faculty and approximately 75 music majors. In 2007, the Department of Music moved into a new state-of-the-art facility for the arts and is now poised for growth in both student numbers and program offerings.
The Department of Music offers a Bachelor of Music in Performance with a concentration in Jazz Studies. The jazz degree program consists of a comprehensive undergraduate jazz curriculum that includes performance opportunities in large ensembles and combos, two levels of jazz improvisation and arranging, as well as jazz history, pedagogy, and a modern jazz performance practice course.
Responsibilities will include teaching an applied jazz area (preferably piano or drums); coach student ensembles; teach other jazz courses within the candidate’s expertise; present master classes in lecture, performance, and one-on-one formats for students and within the local community; maintain national/international visibility as an artist/educator. The Distinguished Professor of Jazz will work closely with the jazz program coordinator, and in particular, participate as well as be directly involved with the annual jazz festival and summer workshops, and other jazz outreach projects.
Qualifications: The successful candidate will have a renowned reputation as a national and international jazz artist. In addition, the candidate should have extensive experience as a jazz performer and/or studio musician, as well as documented experience as a successful clinician and jazz pedagogue.
