ASSOCIATE PROVOST FOR INSTITUTIONAL DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION
The University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW), one of 16 campuses in the UNC system, is seeking an Associate Provost for Institutional Diversity and Inclusion to begin July 1, 2008. The successful candidate will serve as the university’s chief diversity officer and will be a member of the senior leadership team in the Division of Academic Affairs/Office of the Provost. The Associate Provost will serve as a member of the campus leadership team that develops and strengthens diversity initiatives and programs for UNCW.
UNCW has a student population of approximately 12,000 and for nine consecutive years has been ranked in the top ten of public master's universities in the South. For the fourth consecutive year, UNCW has received the "Best in the Southeast" designation by The Princeton Review. Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership to the UNCW units and centers that offer diversity and access programs and equity services
- Advise and collaborate with the chancellor, provost, executive cabinet, academic deans, and other campus leaders regarding UNCW's diversity plan.
- Develop effective working relationships with administrative colleagues, specifically, Academic Affairs, Human Resources, EEO, Admissions, Student Affairs, and Financial Aid.
- Develop an inclusive campus climate with deans and faculty to promote the recruitment and retention of diverse members of the campus community.
- Work collaboratively with Human Resources and Student Affairs to develop or expand conflict resolution capacity across the University for students, faculty, and staff.
- Provide strategic direction in recruiting and attracting students, faculty, and staff of color.
- Establish an appropriate communications program to keep the University engaged with diversity related issues and concerns.
- Establish and maintain relationships between UNCW and the eastern North Carolina region to advance diversity initiatives.
- Engage the campus community in diversity training to develop intracultural awareness and competencies across the campus.
- Actively solicit and manage new funding to support diversity initiatives.
- Report annually to the chancellor on the status of UNCW’s diversity goals.
- develop, implement, and manage programs, practices, and policies that foster structural equity and result in a more inclusive, egalitarian, and collaborative learning community.
- coordinate the on-going development, refinement, and implementation of UNCW’s diversity initiatives.
- foster a climate of inclusion and appreciation for differences in people within the student body, faculty, and staff.
- serve as an active representative of the university in promoting community partnerships within the broad parameters of fostering a diverse learning and working climate on campus.
Qualifications:
- Extensive experience (minimum five years) in a leadership role in higher education, and/or at least five years of progressive experience in diversity or related areas.
- A doctorate or appropriate terminal degree is required.
- Demonstrated successful experience working with senior officers is required.
- Experience in delivery results that foster inclusion and a diverse environment.
- Demonstrated experience in investigating and resolving grievances related to discrimination, including harassment.
- Demonstrated experience in meeting the specific needs of chronically underrepresentated populations in higher education.
- Effective skills in fiscal management and grant writing.
- Superior communication skills that foster a commitment to service excellence, and collegiality.
- Candidates must demonstrate a deep understanding of cultural differences, their social and historical construction, and their relationship to power and privilege in the US society.
- Familiarity with federal and state constitutional and civil rights law.
- Eligibility for an academic appointment is a plus.
