Social Studies
The history department at UNCW believes in teaching, and we are proud of our role in training and preparing the next generation of history and social studies teachers at primary, middle grades, secondary and post-secondary levels. A history major is the most efficient way to work towards the credits required for secondary (high school) social studies teacher certification in the state of North Carolina. Future high school teachers complete a history major and follow the certification program as laid out by the Watson School of Education. Note that there are admission requirements to the Watson school. The courses required for certification, and the sequence to take them in, are listed below. Note also that secondary certification requires the completion of 21 additional hours of “collateral” courses, taken from a mix of political science, Anthropology/Sociology, Geography and Economics offerings.
