Dean’s Welcome

I would like to welcome you to the inaugural online edition of Cameron Insider. In our continuing effort to optimize communication yet more efficiently use resources in support of the campus-wide sustainability focus, we have decided to provide the winter edition via the Web. This summer you will receive a printed copy of the next edition of Cameron Insider.

It has been exciting for Cameron to welcome students in to our new International MBA, a dual-degree graduate program with five European partner schools. Students complete coursework in two schools, two different countries. Our focus is international finance, capitalizing on our Financial Markets Room, the Edward Jones Financial Lab and the $1 million BB&T Student Managed Investment Fund. We continue to be campus leaders in opportunities for Cameron undergraduate students to study abroad.

A year ago we became co-tenants of the fabulous new Computer Information Systems Building. This year we are completing renovations to Cameron Hall which we anticipate will carry us through until this building has a much needed major overhaul. We were able to bring a more professional appearance to the entrance and hallways while improving the classrooms and technical capabilities within the building – please read the piece on the Sales and Marketing Lab for further details.

Cameron continues to be committed to providing the most powerful learning experience possible for our students. In October we were recognized by Princeton Review as one of the best 290 Business Schools, focusing on our Master of Business Administration program. Our Cameron Executive Network continues to gain national attention for the personal one-on-one work of our mentors, including the nearly 35 CEN members who spend a day a week with us participating in our Resume Assistance Program.

We greatly appreciate all you have done to support Cameron School of Business. We want to hear from you and welcome your comments and ideas. I can be reached at clarkl@uncw.edu. Thank you for your ongoing commitment!

Dean Larry Clark

Thomas Simpson

Iraq’s fiscal wizard

The small, windowless office on the second story of UNCW’s Cameron Hall says “newbie professor” more than it does “global financial warrior.” But then Thomas Simpson is nothing if not unassuming.

The soft-spoken instructor brings to the University of North Carolina Wilmington a career that overshadows textbooks: three decades helping shape the nation’s monetary policy as a senior staff member at the Federal Reserve, the organization whose every word is watched by world markets.

But it’s the 64-year-old’s international experience that should make him interesting even to people who yawn at the mere mention of economics.

Continued growth for predicted for local economy

The local economy of Brunswick, New Hanover and Pender counties is forecast to expand by approximately 4.5 percent during 2008, which will likely match the expected growth for all of 2007. This forecasted growth is more than double the growth forecast for the state of North Carolina and the nation.

William W. Hall Jr., senior economist with the Center for Business and Economic Services at UNCW, announced the predictions during the fourth annual Economic Outlook Conference in October.

UNCW students take one bell of a trip

For an undergraduate business major, there aren’t too many college experiences that could top going to New York to ring the Nasdaq closing bell.

Two University of North Carolina Wilmington students got to do just that Nov. 1, thanks to the generosity of a local banker.

Seniors Mary Patman and John Davenport had a whirlwind 24-hour trip to the Big Apple with Rick Willetts, president and CEO of Wilmington-based Cooperative Bank.

Going Global: Cameron Style!

The UNCW Cameron School of Business (CSB) continues to be an innovative, focused business school dedicated to ensuring that its students, faculty and programs add value to the business community it serves. In no program is this better reflected then the international activities embraced in the CSB.

CSB was an early leader domestically in offering a dual undergraduate degree program. Beginning in 1998, partner institutions in France, Germany and Spain helped launch the TransAtlantic Business School Alliance program.
