F-1 Student Off-Campus Employment Authorization
Are you an F-1 visa holder who is interested in working off-campus? Would you like to do a credit-bearing internship this summer? Would you like to have work authorization for after your graduation? Do you know such authorization may take months to be approved? For more information, read this handout and make an appointment with Jennifer Fernandez-Villa to discuss your options.
Extend I-20 or DS-2019s
Students whose I-20 or DS-2019 will expire this May:
Please remember that your I-20 or DS-2019 must always be valid
while you're studying at UNCW. If your I-20 or DS-2019 will
expire this May, you have 3 options:
-
Option 1: Complete your studies in May and
return home. F-1s have a 60 day "grace period" after their
studies end in which they can legally remain in the States.
J-1s have a 30 day "grace period" after their studies end in
which they can legally remain in the States. Students cannot
study or work during the grace period.
-
Option 2: Complete your studies in May and
apply for work authorization with the help of the Office of
International Programs.
-
Option 3: Request an extension of your I-20 or
DS-2019 from the Office of International Programs because
you need more time to complete your studies.
Grace period at the end of your program
If your program ends in May, you still have a "grace
period" after you end your studies in which you can legally remain
in the States.
- J1 students have a 30 day grace period
- F1 students have 60 days
During this time, you are free to
travel the US as long as you exit the US by the last day of your
grace period. You are not allowed to work or study during this
time.

Service Project - Malpass Corner Elementary School
Malpass Corner Elementary School is having an International Fair on April 17 and 18 and is looking for international students at UNCW to visit and share their culture with these young students.
What can I offer? You could share songs, dances, artifacts, language activities, posters - anything really!
Time: They need volunteers from 8:15 - 2:30 if possible, but will take any help they can get, even if you can't stay the entire time.
They are covering N. America, S. America, Antarctica & Europe on April 17th and Asia, Australia & Africa on the 18th so you only need to attend the one day your country is covered.
How do I sign up? If you are interested in participating on either April 17th or 18th please email Ms. Stacy Kiser. Please also let her know if you require transportation to/from the school on the day you visit.
