Application Deadlines
The consortium application deadline is scheduled to provide students the best chance to obtain their first choice of courses. If you cannot make this deadline, please email Amy Mabery to request an extension.

Minimum Requirements for each NC University
Estimated Costs Of Attendance
U.S. federal regulations require that students demonstrate proof of financial support to cover living expenses. The estimated living expenses of each university are listed below:

English Proficiency Requirements
Since university instruction will be provided in English, international exchange students must demonstrate that they are proficient in the local language. The minimum accepted score on a variety of English exams are listed below for each participating North Carolina university.

Application Procedures
To Nominate Students:
To nominate a student, the home university study abroad adviser e-mails UNCW Coordinator of International Student Services, Amy Mabery, the following information:
- Student name
- Preferred North Carolina University
- East Carolina University (ECU)
- University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW)
- Western Carolina University (WCU)
- E-mail address
- Field of study
- Number of semesters student participating on exchange (1 or 2):
Once student is nominated, the student will receive an e-mail requesting the Part 1: Supporting documents.
Once supporting documents are received, the student will receive the access code needed for Part 2: Onine Application.
Part 1: Supporting Documents
Nominated students (or their study abroad advisers) should submit the following supporting documents via e-mail to to Amy Mabery, UNCW Coordinator of International Student Services. If necessary, documents can be sent via regular mail.
- Digital photo showing student's head & shoulders - The photo should be cropped to only include the head and shoulders of
the applicant. The photo does not need to be professional (can be a
cropped Facebook photo, etc) and will be used for interdepartmental
identification purposes.
- Transcript (in English) and a list courses you are currently taking - A copy of your transcript will be given to professors to show
that you have met the prerequisites of the courses you request.
- English proficiency test score (if from a non-English speaking country):

- Proof of Financial Support
See the Cost of Attendance Requirements to determine the minimum funds needed for your preferred NC university.
Proof of financial support can be any of the following:- A copy of your bank account summary showing access to the required funds
- A letter of support from a sponsor and a copy of the sponsor's bank account summary showing access to the required funds
- A letter from your bank (or your sponsor's bank) stating that the required funds are available
- A letter of funding support from your home university or your government
- All financial documents items must be dated and less than 6 months old. Copies/Scans/Faxes are acceptable, but original documents must be brought with you to your visa interview.
Part 2: Online Application
Once students have submitted all required supporting documents,
students will be sent a link and password for the NC / Western Japan Consortium online application.
Once students have completed the online application, their application and supporting documents will be forwarded to the student's preferred North Carolina University.
Non-Exchange English Language Programs
All three participating NC universities also offer advanced English language instruction on a tuition/fee paying basis. The advanced English language programs are not part of the exchange agreement. However, they provide excellent English instruction and allow students with limited English a chance to study in the participating NC universities.
