The Office of International Programs (OIP) is seeking applications from faculty interested in the position of resident faculty director for UNCW’s Swansea University study abroad program for the spring semester 2010.
Expectations and Responsibilities include:
- Proactively recruit participants from UNCW and nationally with the expectation of 20 students minimum and a target of 25-30 students. Outreach and recruitment efforts should commence in late 2008 and proceed until October 2009.
- Participate in the pre-departure orientation at UNCW and assist the Office of International Programsand program participants with pre-departure advising.
- Teach a two-hour Honors Seminar for the program participants and plan and lead excursions as part of the seminar
- Teach up to two courses in either American Studies or your own field as agreed upon with Swansea’s Department of American Studies, through which this program operates. Collaborative research may be substituted for one course.
- Participate fully as a member of the American Studies Department, attending faculty meetings and various other functions incumbent upon faculty members.
- Make yourself available as a mentor and liaison for our students in Swansea, providing advising and counseling as needed, and communicating with OIP regarding issues of importance as they arise.
- Remain a vocal advocate for the program and be willing to serve in the selection and support of future faculty leaders.
Benefits include:
- Roundtrip airfare and ground transportation costs for the faculty leader from Wilmington to Swansea. One pays separately for any accompanying family members.
- Swansea University will assist with housing arrangements and will pay a stipend for the accommodation selected by the faculty leader (up to £650 per month at this time).
- Utilities such as water and council tax are covered by Swansea but the faculty leader is responsible for electric, phone, other utilities and food costs other than a few meals provided by the program.
- The faculty leader receives his or her normal UNCW salary and may choose to be covered by Blanket Accident and Sickness Insurance of the University System of the State of North Carolina.
Ideal applicants should be tenured or tenure-track faculty who have previous experience living, working, of studying in an overseas setting. In addition, applicants should have a demonstrated ability to generate and implement an effective, energetic recruiting plan.
