Considering the benefits of education abroad, perhaps the more important question is, "Can I afford not to study abroad?" The following information is provided to assist students who wish to seek financial aid or grants and scholarships to support studying abroad.
Financial Aid and Education Abroad
Financial Aid may be applied towards the cost of UNCW's 500+ education abroad programs. UNCW's Office of Scholarship and Financial Aid is located in Warwick Center. Individual Financial Aid Counselors are assigned to each enrolled UNCW student . A "Counselor-of-the-day" is also available for walk-in advising. Their website provides important information all forms of UNCW financial aid and scholarships. Students wishing to utlize financial aid towards the costs of studying abroad should follow the steps outlined on the and Study Abroad Information Sheet and Checklist.
Once you have applied for the education abroad program, the Office of International Programs will submit a Cost of Attendance sheet to the Office of Scholarship and Financial Aid so that your financial aid package may be based on this summary of the overall estimated costs (inclusive of flight, etc) assocaited with with your education abroad program.

UNCW Office of International Programs' Education Abroad Grant
The Office of International Programs is pleased to fund a number of education abroad grants awarded to students who apply to study abroad for a semester or longer. Selection is based on academic qualifications including references and GPA, financial need, and a personal essay. All full-time UNCW students earning academic credit abroad on a semester or year-long UNCW education abroad program may apply. Grants awarded generally range from $500-1,000. Any full-time UNCW student earning academic credit abroad on a UNCW-sponsored short-term spring study abroad program may apply. The Office of International Programs is pleased to fund a number of education abroad grants awarded to students who apply to for summer education abroad programs. Selection is based on academic qualifications including an academic reference, academic record, and a personal essay. Any full-time UNCW student earning academic credit abroad on a UNCW-sponsored summer study abroad program may apply. Grants awarded generally range from $250-$900 and are awarded annually in spring. Stella Doran International Studies Award
This special award is presented in memory of Stella Doran and her husband Edward by their son Dr. Guy Doran. The Dorans, citizens of Wilmington and the world, enjoyed travel and serving the community with compassion and generosity of spirit. In order to treasure their memory and to support study abroad opportunities for travel-loving students, The Dorans are contributing over $25,000 for UNCW students with financial needs and high merit. Rising juniors and seniors with at least a 3.0 G.P.A. , demonstrated financial need, and who are applying for a semester or full-year education abroad program may apply. Applicants for this award could be granted $500 to $1000 by completing the Office of International Program Application for Education Abroad Grant.

The UNCW Honors Program provides grants for honors students to use towards UNCW education abroad programs.
The Lapaire French Studies Award
Rewards French majors for academic excellence in French.
Center for Marine Science Travel Stipend
The UNCW Center for Marine Science offers funding opportunities to students participating in the semester exchange program at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom. For spring 2010 a stipend of $5,000 will be offered to qualified applicants, which will offset airfare to the UK and a significant portion of housing cost. Scholarships available from affiliated program providers and partner schools
AIFS- American Institute for Foreign Study
UNCW students automatically receive a grant towards their AIFS program fee, given UNCW's affiliation. Grant amounts of $400 for semester/full year programs and $200 for summer programs will be deducted from you overall AIFS program, fee. Additionally, AIFS annually awards more than $250,000 in scholarships for both summer and semester programs to students who submit application materials demonstrating high academic achievement. ISA - International Studies Abroad
UNCW students automatically receive a $200 discount towards their ISA program fee, given UNCW's affiliation. Additionally ISA awards approximately $60,000 in scholarships each year to students participating in ISA programs. Scholarships are both merit and financial need based and are available for summer, semester, and academic year study. ISEP- International Student Exchange Programs
ISEP offers scholarships through the New York Community Trust-Annet Kade Fund for study in France and Germany. Awards of $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000 are available for full year and semester participants. Two $500 STA Travel Scholarships are also available. Kyung Hee University (KHU) Scholarship Programs
KHU provides special scholarships and benefits to the exchange students from native English-speaking countries (US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and Republic of South Africa) attending the Foreign Mentor Program. Tuition fee is waived for this program.
Mie University offers two scholarships especially for students from partner universities:
The Mie International Scholarship awards students 20,000 yen per month for up to one year. To be eligible students must be planning to study at Mie University for at least 6 months. Up to 20 scholarships are awarded each year.
The Admission Fee and Tuition Waiver for Students who Graduate from Partner Universities is available to:
- Students who are starting their master courses at Mie University in either Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences or Graduate School of Education and have demonstrated exellence in their academic and research achievements.
- Students who are starting their doctor courses at Mie University in Graduate School of Medicine, Graduate School of Engineering, Graduate School of Bioresources or Graduate School of Regional Innovation and have demonstrated exellence in their academic and research achievements.
A recommendation from the president of the university or the dean of faculty is also required. Students who recieve this award are exempt from the admission fee and from tuition during their standard years: between two and four years depending on the program.

Sea Education Association (SEA) in Woods Hole, Massachusetts is pleased to announce a variety of new merit-based financial aid awards for SEA Semester students. These awards, ranging from $500 to $5,000, will be disbursed throughout the year based on a student's experience or excellence in one of the areas listed below. Semester at Sea and the Institute for Shipboard Education (ISE) provide $2.6 million in aid to students each year. ISE offers a wide range of awards in an effort to assist as many students as possible. Scholarships are available for both semester and summer programs. Additional scholarships available for education abroad
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program
This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at a 2-year or 4-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need with the average award being $4,000 (maximum award: $5,000). Students who recieve the Gilman Scholarship are eligible to recieve an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement, for a total possible award of up to $8,000. In addition, the Pilot Summer 2010 Award Cycle is now available. To be eligible applicants must be majoring in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) field. The Bridging Scholarship Japan
The Bridging Scholarship program awards scholarships to American students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study and attending any recognized exchange or independent program in Japan are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Recipients of Bridging Scholarships will receive stipends ranging from $2,500 to $4,000, depending on the length of their study program in Japan. The scholarships are funded by donations from U.S. corporations and foundations to the U.S.-Japan Bridging Foundation. Selection will be based on academic potential and financial need. The scholarships are administered by the Association of Teachers of Japanese. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
BUTEX (British Universities Transatlantic Exchange Association)
BUTEX promotes mobility between universities and colleges in the U.K. and North America and is pleased to offer eight scholarships for undergraduate students currently registered at an institution in the USA or Canada. To be eligible to apply you must have been offered a place as a study abroad or exchange student in a U.K. university which is a BUTEX member.
Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX)
For students and recent graduates who are interested in living, studying, and interning in Germany on a full-year, funded fellowship. CBYX is sponsored by the US and German governments for applicants in all career fields between the ages of 18-24, and does not require any prior German language knowledge! Applicants in business, vocational, technical, engineering, scientific, and agricultural fields are especially encouraged to apply.
Critical Language Scholarship Program
Critical Language Scholarships (CLS) provide fully-funded group-based intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences for seven to ten weeks. Undergraduate, Master's and Ph.D. students who are U.S. citizens are eligible to apply. The CLS Program is part of a U.S. government inter-agency effort to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering critical need foreign languages. Students of diverse disciplines and majors are encouraged to apply.
David L. Boren Awards for International Study
Boren Scholarships and Fellowships provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to add an important international and language component to their educations. We focus on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad.
The Dvelo Fund
The Dvelo Fund is a fellowship program designed to give students the opportunity to study developmental issues in the underdeveloped world.
The aim of the Fund is to support the education of undergraduates wishing to travel to developing countries in order to conduct firsthand research or become involved with the developmental efforts of that region or country. Information can be found at: dvelofund.org/
Frank O' Neill Memorial Scholarship
The 2007 Frank O' Neill Memorial Scholarship is open to anyone attending a university, college, trade school, technical institute, vocational training or other post-secondary education program in the 2007-2008 or 2008-2009 academic year. In addition, eligible students may not have already been receiving or awarded a full-tuition scholarship or waiver from another source. This means that you can not apply if you already have 100% of your school paid for. International students are welcome to apply.
German Academic Exchange Service
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is the German national agency for the support of international academic cooperation. They offer programs and funding for students, faculty, researchers and others in higher education, providing financial support to over 50,000 individuals per year. Graduate Students Fellowship
The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Institute of International Education (IIE) are pleased to announce the Central Europe Summer Research Institute (CESRI). CESRI is a fellowship opportunity for U.S. graduate students in science and engineering who are seeking a quality hands-on international research experience in Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Poland or Slovakia.
Japanese Student Services Organization (JASSO)
JASSO offers a number of scholarshpis for study in Japan. For example, the Short-term Student Exchage Program Scholarship is available for qualified international students accepted by Japanese universities or graduate schools under the student exchange agreement on a short-term basis from about three months to one year. This scholarship awards a monthly stipend: ¥80,000 per month (up to 12 months) and a relocation allowance: ¥150,000(upon arrival only ). The Laura W. Bush Traveling Fellowship
The fellowship will help fund a proposal designed by the applicant to conduct brief work in a foreign country related to the mandate of UNESCO – using education, natural sciences, social and human sciences, culture, and/or communication and information to build strong ties among nations. The fellowship is intended for American college/university students who express an interest in international collaboration but as of yet had not been afforded many opportunities to travel abroad. The length of time for the travel is expected to be between 4 and 6 weeks and should include interaction with individuals from other nations. During his/her travel, the recipient should be willing to participate in public diplomacy events arranged with the pertinent U.S. State Department Consulate, Mission, and/or Embassy. Following the travel, the recipient agrees to submit a report describing experiences and analyzing objectives achieved; share his/her experiences with others; and be available to make a presentation at the Annual Meeting of the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO.
Morgan Stanley Scholarships for Study in Japan
Morgan Stanley awards two $7,500 scholarships to US students who will be studying in Japan to augment its contribution to the Bridging Project for Study Abroad in Japan. Eligible students include juniors and seniors at US universities with an interest in economics and international finance who have been accepted for study in Japan. Winners may also be considered for internships at Morgan Stanley Japan's Tokyo headquarters.
Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants
Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants are designed to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad. Fifty $1,000 grants are awarded each year. Click here for more information.
Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships
Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships are designed to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries. Students must have completed at least two years of college when the scholarship begins; must be a citizen of a country in which there is a Rotary Club; and lineal descendants (children or grandchildren) of Rotarians and their spouses are ineligible. The Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarship awards a grant of $25,000 to be used to cover the cost of tuition and fees, housing, round-trip transportation, and some educational supplies. Initial applications can be made through your local Rotary club, and application deadlines are also set by individual clubs, varying from early March to August 15 of the application year.
Scotland's Saltire Scholarships
This scholarship opportunity is open to students from Canada, China, India, and the U.S. and is aimed at encouraging bright, talented, and hard working individuals to live, work, and study in Scotland. The equivalent of approximately $3,000 toward the cost of tuition is available for students enrolled in a full time Masters level program at any of Scotland's universities and Higher Education Institutions. Son's of Norway Foundation:
King Olav V Norwegian-American Heritage Fund
The fund welcomes applications from Americans, 18 years or older, with a plan of studies to focus on exploring his/her interest in Norwegian heritage or in modern Norway at an institution of higher learning. The Sons of Norway Foundation Scholarship Committee will determine each year the number of scholarship/grants to be awarded. The range is
typically $1,000 – $1,500.

SWEA North Carolina- Study in Sweden
Each year, SWEA North Carolina (the NC chapter of an international
Swedish-speaking women's organization called SWEA) awards one or more
scholarships to a student planning to study Swedish culture, traditions, history or the Swedish language, or to spread knowledge about any of these in the United States. ThinkSwiss Research Scholarships
ThinkSwiss offers 15 scholarships for a research stay in Switzerland. This scholarship program supports highly motivated and qualified U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to do research at a public Swiss university or research institute for 2 to 3 months. The scholarship is open to students of all fields.
To apply for a ThinkSwiss Research Scholarship, you must:
- Be currently enrolled at an accredited U.S. university/college
- Be a graduate student or an undergraduate student who will have completed your sophomore year by the time the research stay in Switzerland begins
- Provide a written confirmation from a professor at a Swiss university that he/she will accept you for a research stay in his/her group

Diversity Scholarships for Education Abroad

The Turkish Coalition of America (TCA) in cooperation with DiversityAbroad.com are awarding up to 50 grants per year in the amount of $2,000 for full-time African-American undergraduates who have been accepted to a study abroad program in Turkey for a semester or a year.
2. Diversity Abroad & Semester at Sea Scholarships
The Semester at Sea & DiversityAbroad.com Scholarships are awarded for summer and fall
voyages. Up to five scholarships will be awarded for the fall voyage. Up to ten scholarships
will be awarded for the summer voyage. Scholarships award amounts are equal to 50% off
the cost of the least expensive cabin category available at the time of confirmation.
3. The Diversity Abroad Study Abroad Scholarship
The Diversity Abroad Study Abroad Scholarship, sponsored by AIFS, will award twenty $1,000 scholarships during the 2008/09 school term. Six scholarships will be offered for fall study abroad, six scholarships for the spring and eight for summer study abroad.
Students must study abroad on a program offered by a Diversity Abroad Member organization (see current member list here: www.diversityabroad.com/study_abroad_partners.php ) Students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds in education abroad are strongly encouraged to apply.

The ISA Diversity Scholarship
The ISA Diversity Scholarship is open to those students who wish to bring a broader cultural perspective to their overseas group, as well as those who are dedicated to encouraging other multicultural students on their home campus to participate in international education programs.
Scholarships are available for participants in ISA semester and summer programs.

The Saint Andrew's Society of Washington, DC annually grants awards from its Washington Scots Charity & Education Fund Scholarship Prorgam.
To be eligible, scholars must be of Scottish birth or descent. Applicants who are United States citizens must maintain their permanent residence in the Mid-Atlantic Region (defined here as comprising the District of Columbia, the States of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, West Virginia, and the Commonwealths of Pennsylvania and Virginia). All applicants must be able to cite their Scottish descent.
Awards are made to scholars enrolled in US or Scottish institutions for the third or fourth year of College or University or full-time graduate study. There are generally 6 to 20 awards made totalling in excess of $20,000. Among these, the following foster academic links between the United States and Scotland:
- The John P. McAdams Memorial Scholarship of $3,500, established by family and friends of the Society’s late President to support Scots and Americans of Scottish descent in their pursuit of University degrees, with preference to those pursuing degrees in history or Scottish culture.
- The Donald Malcolm MacArthur Scholarship of $2,500 is available for an American studying in Scotland.

The Institute for International Public Policy (IIPP) Fellowship Program
is a program of the UNCF Special Programs Corporation that is now
entering its 15th year. The Institute seeks to enhance U.S. national
security and global competitiveness by promoting excellence,

cross-section of the American citizenry. The IIPP also seeks to broaden
access to international education and training opportunities for

The IIPP Fellowship Program provides students from underrepresented
