Steps to Study Abroad

Why study abroad?

Students who have studied abroad typically say it was the experience of a lifetime. It is both challenging and fun, as well as educationally and personally rewarding. Study abroad is an important component of your complete education in our increasingly interdependent world. If real education is the broadening of intellectual horizons and the challenging of stereotypes, then you should study abroad. While abroad, you can get a more accurate picture of the U.S. and its role in the world. Moreover, the careful selection of a study abroad program will give you valuable perspectives on your field of interest, perspectives that would perhaps be more difficult to acquire in the U.S. Employers want to hire people with international experience, and graduate schools consider study abroad a "plus" when reviewing applications. Study abroad can be good for you academically and personally no matter what your major. Don't let this opportunity pass you by!

Getting Started

1. Come to a Study Abroad Information Session. We will provide all the information you need to get started finding the right program for you. Topics covered include study abroad and exchange program offerings, qualifications, features, benefits and the application process.

When: Every Tuesday 4-5

            Every Friday 11-12

            Throughout 2007-08

Where: Office of International Programs

             Westside Hall 1003

Define your Goals and Select a Program

2. There are some important decisions to make in narrowing down your Study Abroad program of choice. Things to be thinking about include: location, desired travel destinations, foreign language proficiency, exchange vs. study abroad programs, academic offerings, cost, and whether you'll study abroad in for an academic year, Fall, Spring semester or summer session. You may browse programs here. Once you have attended a Study Abroad Information Session you may also make an individual advising appointment with the Assistant Director or the Director for Education Abroad, by stopping by the office or by calling (910) 962-3685. We can help you consider program options, discuss concerns and help make study abroad a reality for you!

Apply

3. After you attend a Study Abroad Information session and selected a program, you may pick up an application for your chosen program at the front desk in the Office of International Programs (Westside Hall 1003). For application deadlines, check the program page.

Prepare

4. Make sure you have all your paperwork complete. If you don't already have a passport you can obtain one by visiting Auxiliary Services. They are a fully functional passport office. Once we have endorsed your application, you will attend a pre-departure orientation that will address all variety of issues to ensure that you have a smooth and successful experience abroad. Make sure you complete a Transient Study Form (if applicable) and refer to the International-UNCW Credit Conversion Guide.
