IBEC Students
Q: How many students are enrolled at Isaac Bear?
A: As of fall 2010, there are 231 students enrolled in the program, with 4 cohorts in place: 66 seniors, 40 juniors, 61 sophomores, and 64 freshmen.
Q: What type of student does IBEC recruit?
A: 1. New Hanover County students who are academically proficient (have passed
all End-of-Grade tests) and represent the diversity of the community and New
Hanover County School System.
2. Students who are motivated by the Early College concept, which includes
rigorous academic standards and high expectations, but no sports teams, music
or arts programs; instead they have the opportunity to experience a university
campus and get a head start on college at no cost to them.
3. Typically underrepresented groups in college populations, such as minorities,
low-income students, and students who would be the first in their families to
graduate from college.
Q: What is the current IBEC student profile?
A: IBEC students are neither an elite group nor a group of low performers. Currently, 63% of IBEC students are from groups historically underrepresented on college campuses: 45% are from families with no parent who has earned a two or four-year college degree; 36% are minority students; and 29% are eligible for free or reduced lunch.
