Using Fetch to Transfer Files To And From the Personal Web Server
Here are the steps necessary to use Fetch to transfer files to and from the Student Web Server.
- Open the Fetch 3.0.3 folder. If you do not have one, download and install Fetch.
- Double click on the Fetch 3.0.3 Icon to launch the application.
- The box below will open immediately after launching Fetch:

- Now you need to provide the information for the FTP connection. This information goes in the New Connection box, like the one shown above.
- Click in the block next to "Host:". Then type student.uncw.edu.
- Click in the block next to "User ID:". Then type your exchange username. NOTE: Your Exchange username consists of the portion of your Exchange address that appears before the "@" symbol.
- Click in the block next to "Password:". Then type your EXCHANGE password. Remember, your password is case sensitive.
- The "Directory:" box should be empty. If, when Fetch launches, it has a directory indicated, simply delete it. You are automatically transferred to your directory each time you log in.
- Click on the "OK" button. If the information you typed was correct, Fetch should connect to the Student Web Server and access your files.
- The screen will look similar to the one below upon successful connection:

- If all the directories are displayed, that means you don't have a directory for the Personal Web Server. Email the TAC at tac@uncw.edu to obtain a web directory.
- If there are any files in your directory, they will appear in the box. If not, it will be empty. Also note the name of the current directory is indicated in the drop down box. Remember, you are automatically placed in your own directory upon successful login to the Personal Web Server. Note: If you attempt to view all directories, it will takes a while to load that information from the server, as you are loading the directories for every person with an EXCHANGE userid.
- Now you need to determine if you should do an automatic, text, or binary file transfer. It is recommended that "Automatic" be selected and used for most file transfers. In the automatic mode, Fetch is able to distinguish web page and image files and transfer them as the appropriate type. Fetch Help offers further explanation of Automatic, Text, and Binary file transfers.
- To move a file from the Macintosh to the Personal Web Server:
- Click on the Put File.... button. You will be prompted to select the file you wish to send.
- You will then be asked to provide a name to give the file on the file server, and be asked to pick a file format from the pop-up menu.
- Fetch will pick the same name you originally saved your file as, and will usually pick an appropriate format so you can simply press the OK button.
- The file will be transferred to the Personal Web Server:
- To move multiple files or folders from the Macintosh to the Personal Web Server:
- Click on the Remote command on the menu bar and select Put Folders and Files....
- If all of the files are in one folder, you can navigate to that folder, open it, and use the Add All button to add them to the list of items to be uploaded. Otherwise you can choose them one by one. You can also add folders to the list of items to be uploaded. Once you have finished selecting files to be transferred, click on Done.
- Next you will be asked what formats to use for the transfer. Choose "Text" as the format for text files, and "Raw Data" as the format for all other files (such as images). Then press OK to begin the transfer.
- To move a file from the Personal Web Server to the Macintosh:
- Select (by clicking once with your mouse) the file you want to transfer.
- Click on the Get File.... button. You will be prompted to select a location to save the file on the Macintosh. You will also be given the opportunity to change the file name, if desired.
- Select Save and the file will be transferred.
- To move multiple files from the Personal Web Server to the Macintosh:
- Select the files you want to transfer to the Macintosh one of the following ways:
- Click on the first file to be moved. It will become highlighted. Find the last file to be moved. Hold down the shift key and click on the file name. All the files between the two (and including the two you selected) will become highlighted.
- Click on the first file to be moved. It will become highlighted. Hold down the Apple key (located on either side of the space bar) and select other files one by one you want to move. The highlighted files are the only ones that will be transferred.
- Select the Get File.... button. You will then be asked to select a folder on the Macintosh to save the selected files.
- Select a folder to save the files and select Save. The files will be transferred from the Personal Web Server to the Macintosh.
- Select the files you want to transfer to the Macintosh one of the following ways:
NOTE: If you are running Mac OS 7.5 or higher and you can see the Finder icon for the file you wish to upload, you can simply click the icon and drag it to the Fetch transfer window. In that case, Fetch will use the default upload file format for that type of file, as specified in Preferences. You can also use this method for getting a file. You can drag the selected file(s) from the server to a folder or hard disk icon that is visible on your desktop (or to the desktop itself). Using drag and drop lets you skip the dialog box asking you where to save the file.
- It may become necessary to delete old or unused files. To delete a file - select the file, by clicking once on the file you wish to delete. Then select Remote, and choose Delete Direcory or File.... Files can also be deleted by clicking and dragging them to the trashcan on your Macintosh.
- You have now successfully transferred your files and can select File, then Close to exit Fetch.
