Residential Networking is a co-operative program between ITSD and University Housing provided to all students living in campus housing. Each residence hall room is equipped with network ports that allow students to have a high-speed connection to the Internet.
The cost of an Ethernet connection has been included in residence hall room rent. The student just needs to provide the Ethernet cable.
ResNet student assistants support the residence halls. Please call the TAC at 962-4357 (HELP) to make an appointment with them if you cannot successfully connect your residence hall computer to the network.

ResNet FAQ's
What is Resnet?
ResNet is a service provided by ITSD and Housing and Residence Life to assist students living at UNCW with network connection problems.
Where is ResNet available?
ResNet assistance is available in all the Residence Halls at UNCW.
What does ResNet support?
ResNet supports only the network connection through UNCW ’s network. The technicians that are trained by Client Technology Services are responsible for providing connectivity to the campus network and the Internet. They are not responsible for troubleshooting any other problem you may have with your computer or printer.
What are the minimum recommended computer requirements in order to function on the campus network?
First and most importantly, you need to have your own computer with an Ethernet card. Secondly, the following are the minimum required specifications for:
Windows Computer
Pentium 4, 2.8 GHz or greater (for Desktop)
Pentium M 1.66 GHz or greater (for laptop)
1 GB memory (RAM) or greater
80 GB Hard Drive or greater
Symantec Antivirus software (provided by UNCW)
10/100 or faster Ethernet card
20-25 foot network cable
For laptops you will want an 802.11g wireless car
Macintosh:
OS x 10.x or greater
Dual 2.0 GHz PowerPC G5 or 1.8GHz, or greater (for desktop)
1.25 GHz PowerPC G4 or 1.8GHz Duo, or greater (for laptop)
1 GB of memory or greater
80 GB Hard drive
Symantec Antivirus software (provided by UNCW)
10/100 or faster Ethernet card
20-25 foot Network cable
If you are unsure your computer meets these requirements, the ResNet staff will help you check your system.
What do I do if I am experiencing problems with my network connection?
If you have problems with your network connection you can call the Technology Assistance Center (TAC) at 962-HELP.
Can I use other Operating Systems (Unix, Mac, etc.) on the
campus network?
You can use other operating systems, but they may not work ideally on the campus network. Additionally, students are responsible for the maintenance of their personal computer, peripherals, and any software brought to campus.
We recommend that you bring all CD's that came with your computer in the event that the computer, peripheral, or software may need to be reinstalled.
If I had a network connection last year do I need to sign up again?
Yes, each time you switch rooms, replace your computer or begin a new academic year. All students living on campus must register their network connection at the beginning of every fall semester. Once you are a registered user, the ResNet staff can troubleshoot any problems more efficiently.
What information do I need if I want to do the job myself?
Just make sure you are setup to obtain an IP automatically and then register your computer. Until you are registered your Internet connection will be restricted to campus sites only.
What is an IP address?
An IP (Internet Protocol) number is a method of identifying your computer to the world and to let the world know where to send any information you have requested. They look like this: 10.1.2.12. Your IP is a unique identifier. Thanks to Computing Services we have a method of dynamically issuing IPs through a method called DHCP. DHCP does this by leasing an IP to each requesting computer from a pool of numbers. As a result of this system, we do not issue static IP’s. Besides having the IP as a unique identifier for each computer, the Ethernet adapter card has a unique number as well. This is called the Ethernet or MAC address and looks similar to 00:A0:C9:E6:0E:69. It also allows us to track any problems that get reported.
If I have a problem can a ResNet technician come over today?
Appointments are scheduled on a first come first serve basis. We will do our best to assist you as quickly as we can.
Is there anything stating what I can and cannot do with my internet connection?
Yes, the University has a Responsible Use for Electronic Resources Policy that you are required to read and know .
Is my computer guaranteed to connect to the campus network?
Not all computer systems are designed to be connected to a network. The ResNet staff will do everything they can to assist you, no matter what your operating system and/or platform, but there may be times when a system is incompatible with the supported adapters or software.
