Beginning July 31, 2006, ITSD stopped broadcasting the wireless network "tsunami." Instead, a wireless network named "UNCW" is being broadcast as the university's wireless network.
In addition to the name change, a new encryption method was implemented. Upon connecting to the UNCW wireless network, clients are required to set up their wireless device to connect to the network using WEP encryption.
How to get Connected
When you are on campus and your wireless device is enabled, you will see the wireless network "UNCW" listed as an available network. After you connect to the network and launch your Web browser, you will be prompted to enter your UNCW username and password or your visitor password. After logging in, you will be redirected to a set of instructions to configure your wireless client.

WEP Encryption Standards
- Short for Wired Equivalent Privacy, WEP is a security protocol for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs).
- WEP encryption does not rely on a single server to authenticate wireless clients. Instead, each Wireless Access Point (WAP) requires a key in order for clients to connect to the network.
- WEP users must authenticate their wireless client on the network once every week.
