Bongiorno is an active recitalist, orchestral soloist, jazz artist and clinician who has performed solos with various professional and college ensembles throughout the world. His saxophone and jazz students have received national and international recognition by such organizations as Down Beat magazine and Jazzfest USA. His publications include two solo recordings, three instructional CDs, original compositions for jazz combo, paper presentations at national conferences and more than 100 articles and reviews in various trade magazines.

Bio:

Daniel C. Johnson is the assistant chair of the Department of Music. He teaches applied tuba and euphonium studies as well as courses in music education, music technology and the Honors Scholars Program. Johnson is a certified Orff-Schulwerk instructor and multi-instrumentalist with more than a dozen years of teaching experience. Johnson has performed as principal tubist with the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra, the Long Bay Symphony and the UNCW Faculty Brass Quintet. He also performs and directs the UNCW Early Music Consort. A frequent presenter at regional, national and international conferences, Johnson has published articles in: The Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, Contributions to Music Education, The International Journal of the Humanities, The International Tuba and Euphonium Association Journal, The Kindermusik Educators Journal, The Australian Band and Orchestra Directors Association Journal, The Queensland Kodály News, and on-line at Musicstaff.com. His textbook, Musical Explorations: Fundamentals Through Experience, is published by Kendall-Hunt.

Bio:

Dr. Richard Thomas is on the faculties of the University of North Carolina Wilmington and the Wilmington Academy of Music, is principal cellist of the Wilmington Symphony, and is Head of the String Department at Camp Encore-Coda in Sweden, Maine. Thomas is a former member of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Colombia, (Bogotá, Colombia), the Orquesta Sinfónica del Valle (Cali, Colombia), the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional (Dominican Republic), the South Carolina Philharmonic, East Texas Symphony, Dallas Lyric Opera Orchestra and the Terre Haute Symphony. In addition, Thomas served on the faculties of the Universidad del Cauca (Popayán, Colombia), the Universidad del Valle (Cali, Colombia), the Conservatorio Nacional in the Dominican Republic, the University of South Carolina, and the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities. Thomas studied cello at the Cleveland Institute of Music, De Pauw University, the University of North Texas and the University of South Carolina. His principal teachers include Alan Harris, Robert Jesselson, Robert Newkirk and Adolfo Odnoposoff on cello and Helen Kwalwaser, Luis Biava (Philadelphia Orchestra principal second violin) and Bernard Goldschmidt (Cleveland Orchestra principal second violin) in chamber music. Thomas plays a 2004 Guadagnini model Joseph Grubaugh & Sigrun Seifert cello.

Mike Waddell

Bio:

Mike Waddell is a Wilmington, North Carolina native with degrees from the University of Michigan (M.M. ‘79, clarinet) and East Carolina University (B.M.E. ‘78). His teachers include David Shifrin, Robert Listokin, Fred Ormand, Buddy DeFranco (jazz), and Donald Sinta (saxophone). Since the late 70’s, he has performed on clarinet and saxophones in a number of styles, touring in the U.S. and abroad.

Waddell is the recipient of two Jazz Composer Fellowships from the North Carolina Arts Council (‘94 & ‘99), as well as two Regional Project Artist Grants from the United Arts Council (‘98 & ‘04). His has released two jazz CD’s, “Defining Moments” (2001) and “Not From Concentrate” (‘95). Jazz Times reviewer Owen Cordle writes, “Defining Moments defines Mike Waddell as a complete artist, a triple threat as clarinetist, saxophonist, and composer. “Mr. Cordle chose this as one of his top ten jazz picks of 2001 in the Raleigh, N.C. News and Observer.

As a clarinetist, saxophonist (and vocalist) with the world famous Dukes of Dixieland in New Orleans in the late ‘80s, Mr. Waddell performed nightly on Bourbon Street and to sold-out crowds in the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Kennedy Center with the National Symphony.

Waddell has also performed to positive reviews on pianist Ed Paolantonio’s “Dad’s Blues” (‘98), guitarist Scott Sawyer’s “In The Stream” (‘93), and concertized with the Temptations, Four Tops, American Dance Festival, North Carolina Theatre, Fairbanks Symphony, Artic Chamber Orchestra, Larry Coryell, Ken and Harry Watters, as well as the late jazz guitarist, Charlie Byrd. He is also featured on solo clarinet in “Déjà Vu” (’97), an independent film by Henry Jaglom.

Dr. Mary Jo White

Bio:

Originally from North Carolina, Mary Jo White returned to this area several years ago and is now the Assistant Professor of Flute and Theory at UNC-Wilmington and principal flutist of the Wilmington Symphony. An active performer throughout the region, Dr. White also plays regularly with the UNCW Faculty Woodwind Quintet and other faculty chamber groups. In November, she will present a lecture-recital on the flute music of Albert Roussel at the national College Music Society conference in Quebec City.

Before coming to Wilmington, she was the Flute Instructor at Boston College and a freelance flutist in the Boston area where she performed with Hyperprism (20th Century Ensemble in Residence at Boston College), the Emmanuel Church Bach Orchestra, the French Library Chamber Players, Underground Composers, and others. Her degrees include a Bachelors in flute performance from East Carolina University, a Masters in flute performance from Michigan State University, and a doctorate in flute performance from Boston University where she studied with Doriot A. Dwyer. She performed as a soloist with the orchestras at all three schools. Her prior positions include Assistant Professor of Flute at Central Michigan University and Instructor of Flute at Truman State University. She was also the Principal Flute for the Alma and Traverse City Symphonies in Michigan, and Second Flute/Piccolo for the Lansing Symphony.
