Department Facilities

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is located in Bear Hall.

Bear Hall was named in recognition of the original Isaac Bear Building, located across the street from New Hanover High School in Wilmington, which served as the first home of Wilmington College, from 1947-1961. Wilmington native Samuel Bear, Jr. erected the original building as a memorial to his brother Isaac Bear. The building was occupied in 1972 and was expanded in 1989 and 1995. It currently also houses the following:

Bear Hall Classroom Lab Bear Hall Small Classroom Lab

There are three large computer labs seating about 35 students each and a smaller lab seating about 20 students. These labs also serve as multimedia classrooms with instructor stations in the front of the room and using the latest technology.The Department also uses four other classrooms in Bear Hall, three of which are equipped with multimedia projection systems.

Students and faculty have access to numerous computing programs which enhance the teaching and research activities in the department. Among these programs are Maple, Matlab, Mathcad, Jump-In, and SAS. The Department also provides computer access to students in the evenings.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics also supports the Math Lab. The Math Lab services students needing help with undergraduate courses in mathematics and statistics. It provides a variety of resources, helps with placement testing for new students and provides tutoring.

Nearby William Randall Library contains over 530,000 hardbound volumes, and over 10,000 print and electronic journal subscriptions, including many journal titles related to the study of mathematics and statistics.
