on January 19, 2011.
National Park Service personnel at Cape Hatteras National Seashore responded to the stranding of a dead female common dolphin at Rodanthe on January 19, 2011. The carcass was brought back to UNCW for a thorough necropsy the following day. This animal was the first of four Delphinus strandings on the Outer Banks over a period of four days. Abnormal findings from the necropsy included a thin and heavily parasitized blubber layer, cysts on the pancreas and left lung, enlarged lymph nodes, and scarring of the liver.
