Risso's dolphin prepped for necropsy with undergraduate volunteers

On the morning of January 26, 2010, a live Risso's dolphin stranded in Buxton, NC. National Park Service were the first responders to the animal. She was an adult, old female with raised skin lesions and thin body condition. The carcass was transported back to UNCW for necropsy the following day with multiple undergraduate and graduate volunteers helping. Upon necropsy, it was revealed that the animal suffered from multiple systemic illnesses with numerous pathological lesions considered associated with old age.
