MDB 090: Humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae)
Stranding personnel look over a young humpback
whale that stranded in Hatteras Inlet, NC on May 15,
2010.
A live, young humpback whale (8.78 m long) was found on a sand spit in Hatteras Inlet on May 15, 2010. The Coast Guard played an integral part in the stranding response, as they provided transportation for stranding personnel to the remote location of the whale. Collaboration between several organizations made a thorough initial assessment and subsequent necropsy possible. Significant findings included evidence of human interaction.
