RJM 011: Bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus)
Laura Bagge, UNCW graduate student, examines a
coastal bottlenose dolphin that washed ashore
within Camp Lejeune.
On April 24, 2010, a coastal bottlenose dolphin washed ashore within Camp Lejeune, NC. UNCW MMSP recovered the dolphin on the following day and conducted a necropsy. The carcass was a sexually mature female dolphin. Due to the animal’s advanced state of decomposition, a thorough examination could bot be conducted on many internal organs. Significant findings include an abundance of purulent material within the pleural cavity, and a raised, pus-filled lesion on the lung.
