WAM 611 - Pygmy sperm whale at Holden Beach, NC

UNCW received a report from the Holden Beach Police Department at approximately 9:30pm on August 15, 2005 of a live stranded animal under the Holden Beach Pier. After collecting equipment, UNCW arrived at 11pm to a recently expired adult male pygmy sperm whale (Kogia breviceps). The animal was removed from the beach to the Holden Beach maintenance area for necropsy early the following morning. Necropsy revealed gross lesions including a flaccid heart and congested liver.
