WAM 631- Bottlenose dolphin

A fresh, offshore female bottlenose dolphin was found dead in the surf at North Topsail Beach, NC on the afternoon of March 3, 2007. It was transported to UNCW for a necropsy, which was conducted on the morning of March 4, 2007. The animal was not robust, though not obviously emaciated. The animal was elderly with evidence of recent parturition. The necropsy found numerous lesions in the animal including heavy lungs with calcareous lesions, erosions throughout the stomach, multiple lymph node irregularities, and multiple cardiac lesions. Heart lesions may be suggestive of cause of death, although this finding awaits results from histopathological investigation.
