WAM 649 Humpback whale strands on Oak
Island beach on February 8th. The whale
showed signs of recent entanglement.
On February 8, 2009, UNCW received a phone call from Oak Island Police about a large dark whale floating in the water. UNCW Marine Mammal Stranding Team, in collaboration with Oak Island Municipalities, carried out a necropsy on the male humpback whale, which showed evidence of recent entanglement.
