WAM 651 Bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus)
A highly emaciated bottlenose dolphin live stranded on
Oak Island.
On July 31st, a live dolphin at Oak Island was reported to the stranding team at UNCW. When the team arrived on the beach, it was obvious that the female bottlenose dolphin was in very poor body condition and highly emaciated. After a physical examine by the attending veterinarian, the decision was made to humanely euthanize the dolphin. The animal was brought back to UNCW for a necropsy to be conducted at a later date.
