Harp Seal (Phoca groenlandica)
March 9th - Live harp seal naturally hauled
out onto the beach at Surf City, NC.
On March 9, 2009 Surf City Police Dept. reported a live seal hauled out on the beach. UNCW responded to visually inspect the seal for any signs of external injury. It was alert although approachable. There were no obvious signs of external injuries. Additional haul outs of live seals have been reported by Oak Island on March 14, 2009 and Bald Head Island March 15, 2009.
Live seals are vistors to our shores throughout the year. Periodically, they come onto land (haul out). This is natural seal behavior. Please treat seals with caution and approach no closer than 150 feet. If you do see a seal and have any concern that it may need assistance, please notify your local municipality, police department or number above. For an excellent overview of seals in the mid-Atlantic, please see the VA Aquarium and Marine Science Center website.
