MUS 300 Analysis Paper Assignment |
|
Begin with a one-page outline of the entire movement, including musical examples of the main themes. This will establish the labels used throughout the discussion which follows. Introductory paragraph: Start with a general statement, then narrow down to your topic. It helps to have a thesis, or basic position, even in an analysis paper. The final sentence of this paragraph should state the thesis. Paragraphs 2, 3, 4, 5, etc.: Discuss the details of how the piece is put together. The level of detail should vary; focus closely only on the more interesting points. Try to show how the elements of music (melody, harmony, rhythm, form, texture) contribute to the expressive effect of the composition. Include musical examples. Final paragraph: show how your discussion has supported your thesis, and bring the paper to a satisfying conclusion. Paper should be approximately 700 - 1000 words or 2 - 3 pages, including the musical examples but not including the outline, which will take another page. Musical examples should be handwritten or produced on the computer, reduced, and pasted in to the paper, either physically or in a word-processing program. Photocopies from the music are not acceptable. Sonata No. 1, 1st movement, Allegro (pp. 1 - 4)
