Chorale Prelude

The chorale melody typically occurs in long note values against a backdrop of faster counterpoint, which may or may not have a thematic relationship with the chorale. This accompanying counterpoint often appears by itself first before each phrase of the chorale is heard. In the accompanying material is often an embellished version of the chorale

Examples:

Bach: "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring:- Flowing counterpoint has contour of chorale in top voice. This counterpoint usually ceases as the chorale (in four-part homophony) comes in in longer note values.

Bach: Chorale prelude "Ein feste Burg", for organ

Bach: Cantata #80, No. 5 Bach, Cantata #80, No. 1
