Developing a Listening Guide

1. The guide should be one to two pages and in outline form, with level of indent indicating importance of material (even musical examples should be indented).

2. Major parts of form, section and subsections should be shown.  Headings should include key areas (by Roman numeral or letter name as appropriate) and include a starting measure number or measure number range.

3. Musical examples should include complete phrases (unless a motive is being illustrated) and transposed to concert pitch if necessary. Generally only the melodic line is given unless other elements are important. Once given and labeled, the themes can be referred to later by label. Motives should be bracketed and labelled.

4. Musical examples should be produced on computer or neatly handwritten and reduced in size. Photocopies of score are not acceptable.

5. Give measure number at the beginning of each musical example
