MUSIC 306- Orchestration and Arranging

Attendance: attendance records are not kept; however, you are responsible for all of the material covered in class and must turn in assignments on time regardless of class attendance

Texts: outlines will be supplied online

Assignments: Finale 2007 templates will be provided for all assignments; the preferred method of submitting both drafts and completed projects will be in Finale format. Drafts may be e-mailed to me; final versions should be printed. For some projects, use of Finale will be mandatory.

Grading: (approximate) 80% on projects, 20% on quizzes. All projects are due on date assigned at the beginning of class (late papers will be accepted up to the next class meeting and reduced one full letter grade; beyond that, late papers are not accepted).

Examination: Final examination (error-detection quiz) is Friday, May 1, 8 - 11 a.m.

GOALS OF THE COURSE

To investigate the characteristics of the voices and instruments used in modern small and large ensembles and learn to arrange the melodic, harmonic, rhythmic, and countrapuntal elements of music for them. The first half of the course will be an introduction to instrumentataion, and the second half will consist of directed projects in writing for small instrumental ensemble, orchestra, and band. Some projects will be written for local ensembles
