                                                        REQUIREMENTS

 

TEXT:  Group Piano for Adults, Book 1.  E. L. Lancaster and Kenon D. Renfrow.  Alfred Publishing Company.   In addition, you will need a set of headphones with adapter to fit the electronic pianos in the piano lab.  You need to bring the headphones and adapter to each Mus 141 class meeting.

 

ATTENDANCE:   Although the instructor provides opportunities for each studentÕs achievement of course objectives, students will realize their full potential only by attending class regularly.  Roll will be taken at each class meeting.  Your attendance will be taken into consideration in case of a borderline final grade.  It is each studentÕs responsibility to personally contact the instructor in advance, if class is going to be missed, regarding missed assignments.  The instructor will not accept late work without valid reasons.  Students are encouraged to contact the instructor any time they are not achieving their intended level of success.

 

METHODS OF ACHIEVING SUCCESS:  Achieving success in this course will require a time commitment outside of class that averages six hours per week.  It is vital that you prepare class assignments and actively participate in class activities and review.  You may practice in the Kenan Hall practice rooms and/or the piano lab in Kenan Auditorium.  The piano lab is available Monday-Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM during non-class hours.

                                        Daily Preparation         30%

                                        Final Exam                     25%

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:  To develop skills at the piano, including major and minor scales and arpeggios, major chord progressions, sight-reading, repertoire pieces, accompanying, harmonization.  Reference:  The UNC-W Department of Music ÒGuidelines & Requirements for Piano Proficiency (8/99).Ó  For non-keyboard music majors who have not passed the piano proficiency examination.
