Daniel C. Johnson, Ph.D., graduated summa cum laude from the University of Arizona. His primary areas of concentration were music cognition, critical thinking, music listening, and educational psychology during his doctoral studies in music education. He earned his Graduate Diploma magna cum laude from the New England Conservatory of Music and his Master’s degree magna cum lade from the St. Louis Conservatory of Music while studying tuba and euphonium with members of the Boston, St. Louis, Chicago, and New York City Ballet Orchestras. He received his Bachelor’s Degree magna cum laude from Emory University with majors in Music and Chemistry.
Dr. Johnson is a certified Orff Schulwerk instructor and multi-instrumentalist with over fifteen years of teaching experience at the elementary and collegiate levels. He regularly presents teacher-training workshops and courses both in the United States and internationally. Formerly on the faculty at Keene State College and Franklin Pierce College, Dr. Johnson also taught general, choral, and instrumental music at Community Music of New England, the Keene (NH) Institute of Music and Related Arts, the Brattleboro (VT) School of Music, the Hampshire Country School, and New Boston Central School, a HOTS (Higher-Order Thinking Skills) school and recipient of the School of Excellence Award. Dr. Johnson has presented his research at state, regional, national, and international conferences sponsored by the Music Educators National Conference, the American Orff-Schulwerk Association, the International Society for Music Education, the College Music Society, and the New Hampshire and Arizona Music Educators Association.
Johnson is also the Research Committee Chair for the North Carolina Music Educators' Association. He has published articles in: The Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, Contributions to Music Education, The International Journal of the Humanities, The International Tuba and Euphonium Association Journal, The Kindermusik Educators Journal, The Australian Band and Orchestra Directors Association Journal, The Queensland Kodály News, and on-line at Musicstaff.com.
As a performer, Dr. Johnson has appeared with the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra, the Long Bay Symphony, and the UNCW Faculty Brass Quintet. He has also performed as a soloist with the Laney High School Band and founded the UNCW Early Music Consort. With the Conservatory Brass Quintet, Dr. Johnson won second place in the 1989 Keystone Brass Institute Competition and premiered several unpublished works for brass quintet. As a member of the NC School of the Arts International Festival Orchestra, Dr. Johnson toured Italy, Germany, Austria, France, and Switzerland. His performing experience also includes appearances with ensembles in Mexico, Europe, and the United States with the New Hampshire Philharmonic, St. Louis Philharmonic, New Bedford Philharmonic, and the Keene (NH) Chamber Orchestra, as well as with numerous brass quintets.
