Music

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Students are assigned full-time
to practicum sites in music. The setting
is selected from elementary general music, middle or high school chorus, band
or orchestra, with consideration for the student's performance concentration
and career goals. During the course
students will engage in a variety of instructional activities supervised by the
partnership teacher and a university supervisor. Responsibilities will increase until a
full-time teaching load is assumed by the student.
OBJECTIVES:

teacher in the public schools of

Demonstrate content knowledge and align instruction with the
NC Standard Course of Study
·
Develop and implement lesson plans with appropriate
objectives, strategies, sequences, and evaluation procedures
·
Demonstrate the ability to achieve educational objectives
with all learners by differentiating instruction
·
Demonstrate an effective practice of reflection and
adjustment in teaching practices
·
Demonstrate appropriate and effective classroom management
procedures, including encouraging an environment that is supportive,
respectful, inclusive, and flexible
·
Communicate effectively and work collaboratively with
students, parents, teachers and school staff
EVALUATION:
At the conclusion of the
practicum semester the following grading criteria will be applied:
A = Teaching skills are
often at a high level for a beginning teacher.
Intern is rated as proficient in all 5 of the North Carolina
Professional Teaching Standards on the UNCW Intern Performance Scale. Intern frequently demonstrates initiative and
independence in teaching and in expanding the scope of his/her teaching
competencies.
B = Teaching skills are
sometimes at a high level for a beginning teacher. Intern is rated as proficient in 4 of the 5 standards,
including 2, 3 and 4, and as emerging competence on one standard, either 1 or 5
on the Intern Performance Scale. Intern
demonstrates clear evidence of growth in teaching and understanding of the
learning process.
C = Teaching skills are just
adequate for a beginning teacher. Intern
is rated as proficient in 3 of the 5 standards on the Intern Performance
Scale. To receive a “C” and be
recommended for licensure the intern must be rated as proficient on standards
2, 3 and 4. Intern demonstrates some
evidence of growth in teaching and understanding of the learning process.
D = Performance is unacceptable.
Intern receives one or more ratings below proficient on standards 2, 3
and 4. The intern requires considerable
supervision and assistance, beyond that designed into the program, to maintain
an adequate scope of competencies.
Initial licensure will not be recommended.
The grade of ‘W’ is assigned if the student is withdrawn from the
internship during the semester. Withdrawal may be required in situations where
there is clear evidence that pupils are not learning, or when the relationship
between the intern and the partnership teacher is irreconcilably impaired.
Other serious circumstances may also lead to withdrawal from the internship.
A grade of ‘I’ may be assigned if performance is satisfactory during
practicum, but the student is unable to complete the semester due to personal
health or family circumstances, or when it is determined that a student requires
additional time for development of his or her teaching competencies.

bribery, and cheating, and the procedures for reporting and adjudication of any
activities involving student dishonesty.
