I. Flute
Seminar (TBA)
A. Purpose

B. Requirements
1. Attendance
mandatory for all flute majors and minors and recommended
for
all flute students
2. Flute
majors will be required to perform at least twice and minors at least
once
per semester in flute seminars or Departmental recitals.
3. Flute
students are required to have assigned materials ASAP including a
metronome
and tuner.
II. Flute
Lessons
A. General
Objectives
1. To
study and perform music indigenous to masterful flute playing
2. To
develop the necessary skills through various technical, tone, intonation,
articulation
and interpretation studies
3. To
develop an awareness of musical interpretation through understanding
the historical periods and listening to various
recordings and performances.
B. Requirements
1. A
grade will be earned for each lesson based on the individual's progress.
2. All
lessons should be prepared carefully in regard to correct notes, rhythm,
tone,
interpretation, intonation and articulation.
3. Attendance
is mandatory. Make-up lessons will
be scheduled only for
excused
absences.
4. Flute
majors need to attend eight concerts per semester. At least six of
these
should be concerts in which the flutist is not a performer.

music.
C. Materials
1. See
attached repertoire list for required solos and etudes expected of each
level
of undergraduate study at UNCW.
2. Each
student must own his/her own flute and keep it in good playing
condition.
3. Each
flutist must own a metronome and tuner.
D. Evaluation
1. A
grade will be earned for each lesson.
A missed lesson (unexcused) will
count
as a zero.
2. Final
semester grades will be determined by the following percentages:
50% Average of weekly
lessons
25% Final jury grade
25% Seminar and concert
attendance (i.e., perfect attendance=A,
0-3
absences=B, 4 absences=C, etc.)
