The North Carolina Geographer

Now Accepting Submissions!!

The North Carolina Geographer is published by the North Carolina Geographical Society and serves as a medium for the dissemination of research about North Carolina’s geographic phenomena. The editorial staff welcomes contributions from geography faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, and professional geographers.  All submissions should conform to the Guidelines for Authors provided below.

Beginning in 2004, The North Carolina Geographer will have a new format with two sections: Research Articles and Carolina Landscapes.  Specific guidelines for authors regarding each section are included in the Guide for Authors.

  • Section I: Research Articles -- This section will include original, peer-reviewed research articles of interest to geographers.

  • Section II: Carolina Landscapes -- This new section includes four components.

    • Current Carolina -- Short essays (1500 words maximum) concerning current events in North Carolina and the region that illustrate the applicability of and insight that geographic analysis provides for an understanding of North Carolina’s modern landscapes.

    • Carolina Lessons -- A lesson plan from an instructor (at any level) that is used to teach the geography of North Carolina.

    • Carolina Geographers -- a biographical sketch of a North Carolina geographer or geographic institution.

Hard Copy

 • Submit one clean paper copy of the entire paper.  Please provide full contact information including mailing address, phone number, and email address.

 • References are to be double-spaced and in alphabetical order by authors last name. Examples of the format style that should be used are given below.

Bartlett, P. (1993) American Dreams, Rural Realities:  Family Farms in Crisis.  Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press.

Slattery, M.; Burt, T.; and Gares, P. (1997) “Dramatic Erosion of a Tobacco Field at Vanceboro, North Carolina.”  Southeastern Geographer 37(1): 85-90.

 • Figures and tables should be submitted on separate pages.  High quality photographs may be included (they will be printed in black and white).

 Electronic Copies

Following review of your manuscript you will be informed about the status of your manuscript by the appropriate journal editor.  Please communicate directly with this editor in order to avoid any confusion with your manuscript.

Although we encourage all manuscripts to be submitted electronically, your final manuscript must be submitted electronically via email to the appropriate editor.  Please adhere to the publishing standards adopted by the Association of American Geographers.

  • Submit the text/body of the manuscript in either Word or WordPerfect format.  Please indicate the author’s name on the disk(s) and in the file name.

  • Submit all figures as separate files.  Do not imbed your figures in the body of the manuscript.  Tiff is the preferred format.  Name your files as fig1.tiff, fig2.tiff. etc.

  • When exporting graphics from programs, make sure they are HIGH QUALITY images.  We produce images at 600 dpi for B&W line art and 300 dpi for gray scale images.

  • If you are unable to send electronic copies of figures we can scan and create the digital files for you. Please check the legibility of all figures prior to submission. Please print the copy to be scanned on an 8.5 x 11 sheet of white paper, with the image printed as large as possible. If you have any questions about how your figures will appear in the journal, please contact the editor.
