Department of Mathematics and Statistics

Dr. Dijana Jakelic will be joining the faculty as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Mathematics in January 2009. Dr. Jakelic received her BS in Mathematics from the University of Zagreb, Croatia in 1991 and her PhD in Mathematics from Indiana University in 2000. The title of her dissertation is “Structure of some representations of quantum groups, their crystal bases and completions.” Before coming to UNCW, Dr. Jakelic held positions of Research Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics at The University of Texas at Austin; Postdoc/Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of California at Riverside; Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Virginia; Visitor to the Institute of Mathematics at the State University of Campinas, Brazil; Research Fellow at Max Plank Institute for Mathematics, Bonn, Germany; and Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Nolan McMurrayDr. Nolan McMurray, Assistant Professor. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is excited towelcome back Dr. Nolan McMurray, who has rejoined the faculty as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Mathematics. Dr. McMurray received his BS in Computer Science in 1992 and his ME in Mathematics Education in 1996, both from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. He earned his MS and PhD in Mathematics from the University of Mississippi in 1999 and 2003, respectively. The title of his dissertation is “On Largest Circuits and Cocircuits in Matroids.” Dr. McMurray was a tenure-track Assistant Professor at UNCW from 2003 to 2006. Since then has been an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Texas State University—San Marcos.

Ginger A. RhodesDr. Ginger A. Rhodes, Assistant Professor. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is excited to welcome Dr. Ginger Rhodes, who has joined the faculty as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Mathematics Education. Dr. Rhodes received her BA in Mathematics Education from North Carolina State University in 1998 and her MA in Education in Mathematics from East Carolina University in 2000. She received her PhD in Mathematics Education from the University of Georgia in 2007. The title of her dissertation is “Professional noticing: What do teachers notice about students’ mathematical thinking?” Before coming to UNCW, Dr. Rhodes taught as a part-time Assistant Professor at the University of Georgia.

Dr. Allison Toney, Assistant Professor. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is excited to welcome Dr. Allison Toney, who has joined the faculty as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Mathematics Education. Dr. Toney received her BA in both Mathematics and Music from the Salem College in 2000 and her MA in Mathematics from Indiana University in 2002. She received her PhD in Educational Mathematics from the University of Northern Colorado in 2008. The title of her dissertation is “Women with Advanced Degrees in Mathematics in Doctoral Programs in Mathematics Education.”

Yishi WangDr. Yishi Wang, Assistant Professor. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is excited to welcome Dr. Yishi Wang, who has joined the faculty as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Statistics. Dr. Wang received his BS in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Science and Technology in Beijing, China. He received his MS and PhD in Mathematical Statistics from the State University of New York at Binghamton in 2004 and 2006, respectively. The title of his dissertation is “Some New Tests for Normality.” Before coming to UNCW, Dr. Wang held the rank of Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Western Carolina University, where he taught a variety of undergraduate mathematics and statistics courses and conducted research in mathematical statistics.
