UNCW Featured in Fiske Guide to Colleges 2018

Friday, July 14, 2017

UNCW is recognized in the prestigious Fiske Guide to Colleges 2018, which highlights the nation’s “best and most interesting” colleges and universities. The guide, published since 1982, is a popular resource for students seeking to find the right fit in an institution of higher education.

The Fiske Guide recognizes UNCW's commitment to excellence, a key priority outlined in the university's Strategic Plan.

“Students have many qualities to consider when selecting a college or university, and it is important to provide useful information to help them choose the school that best fits their educational goals,” said Chancellor Jose V. Sartarelli. “Inclusion in the Fiske Guide enables college-bound students to gain a more complete picture of what UNCW has to offer, including excellent academic programs, a beautiful campus, a commitment to celebrating diversity and strong support from faculty, staff and fellow students.”

Compiled by former New York Times education editor Edward B. Fiske, the Fiske Guide is a selective look at a fraction of the more than 2,200 institutions in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. Inclusion is based first and foremost on academic quality, but the Fiske team also considers such factors as the presence of signature programs, social life and overall quality of student life.

Among the attributes highlighted in UNCW’s entry are specialized academic programs such as marine sciences, film studies and creative writing; study abroad opportunities in more than 50 countries; the ETEAL program (Experiencing Transformative Education through Applied Learning); a commitment to help students from lower-income families get through college without incurring significant debt; and programs that aid the transition from high school to college.

UNCW was also featured in other recent rankings, including:

  • 4th among the Top 25 Best Online Master’s in Education Programs nationally as selected by the website Online College Plan. The website also named UNCW 8th on a list of the Top 20 Best Online Colleges in North Carolina; 17th among the Top 25 Online R.N.-to-B.S.N Programs nationally; and 9th among the Top 20 Best Online Colleges Near Charlotte.
  • 9th among the 25 Best Colleges in North Carolina 2017 as selected by the website College Choice.

The Fiske Guide contains anecdotal observations to help prospective students learn “the real personality” of the featured colleges and universities. UNCW students praised the collaborative learning environment and cited many features they love about being Seahawks, including:

“Though academics can be challenging, the university provides many tools for academic success.”

“Professors at UNCW want to help their students.”

“Learning Communities are a game changer. They allow freshmen to get used to a college workload, but in a familiar environment where they feel comfortable.”

“Everyone here always seems to be in a good mood and goes out of their way to speak to and help others. Maybe it’s the southern charm in us, but whatever it is, it sure helps make this laid-back college an awesome place to attend.”

The 2018 Fiske Guide is available in bookstores and online.
