The lionfish in this aquarium was caught in 50 miles off the coast of North Carolina on February 4, 2004. It is about eight inches long and has fared well in captivity on a diet of fish and crustaceans. Scientists from the National Marine Fisheries Service, in conjunction with a project funded by NOAA's Undersea Research Center at UNCW, hope to collect a number of specimens for laboratory experiments.
(Note: The lionfish may occassionally swim out of the frame of the image. The occasional groupings of white blobs that appear in the image are air bubbles from the tanks filter, which is located directly in front of the camera.
