Project Summary for 2005–04–06: Archaeological expedition to the steamer, Queen of Nassau
This project will be a comprehensive examination of the site believed to be the steamer Queen of Nassau, former Canadian Government Ship (CGS) Canada. Archaeologists and divers will document this twentieth century warship using digital photography and video to create a plan view mosaic of the entire wreck site. By using the evidence collected, this project will document the vessel remains and associated artifact assemblage. This documentation will be a valuable resource management and educational tool in regards to the protection of submerged cultural resources, deep–water archaeological techniques, and Canadian naval history. Such work would assist in preserving and interpreting this shipwreck for divers and non-diving public alike.
Research products generated during the proposed fieldwork will include a plan view photo–mosaic and a wealth of video and photographic imagery. This documentation will be used in educational and outreach opportunities, as well as part of formal presentations at professional archaeological conferences. This baseline information is essential for creating a sound management plan for the site, as well as gaining a better archaeological understanding of the shipwreck.
