2005 Project Summaries

Project Summary for 2005–05–03: Real–time Currents and Water Quality Monitoring in the FKNMS

1150’ umbilical for the Phantom S2 ($12,000): New umbilical for the Center’s Phantom S2 ROV to continue support throughout the South Atlantic Bight and the Gulf of Mexico. The ROV is used extensively for habitat characterization, fisheries, and multi-beam ground truthing. A new umbilical typically lasts 6 — 7 years depending on amount of use and environment (type of relief) that it is used on. The current umbilical has been re–terminated on the subsea end four times and has several repairs where the outer jacket has been breached, and it is not likely to last beyond 2005.

Upgrade on Phantom S2 lights ($10,000): Deep Sea Power and Light 110 or 220 VAC HID lights with self contained, instant illumination ballasts will replace the current incandescent lights on the Phantom S2 ROV. These are state of the art, small, light–weight, high illumination lights that have just been put on the market. The units come with self contained ballasts and instant illumination capability; there is no warm up period typical of other arc lights. These lights will double the range of vision of the ROV, which is currently approximately six feet. HID lighting is used on various submersibles and the one man subs use this lighting to take digital still photographs, eliminating the need for strobe light.

Repair and maintenance ($2291): Spare boards and parts for the ROV; system now operating without spare circuit boards (heading/depth board with matched depth transducer, rear terminal board, spare 18 and 24 VDC power supply boards, and camera switching board); spare bulbs for the lights; shaft seals; new props; and third laser to create laser scaler and distance indicator coupled with the two existing
