Project Summary for 2006-05: Operational and diver training support
This intramural project is dedicated to support SAB/GOM training and technology development activities. Scuba techniques (including advanced diving) and a support vessel are required to conduct open-water training dives for scientists as part of the AAUS and NURC certification process. Advanced training and proficiency exercises for staff and equipment testing allow NURC/UNCW to provide cutting edge wet diving, ROV, and AUV techniques to the scientific community. New, unproven equipment and technology must be tested and staff must become expert operators prior to use on research projects without sacrificing dive time on extramural projects. Specific goals for 2005 include trimix technical diving training for scientists (one 8-day class); integration, testing and skills enhancement on the ROV integrated navigation system and related software (one day); digital video and stills of ROV equipment and divers in the water (one day); and training and proficiency dives with nitrox for scientist directly supported by the research grant (5 days).
