Instruction for web-based GIS
The online GIS environment     Once the link to the IMS application has been clicked, a request is sent to the UNCW Spatial Analysis Laboratory server .  During the users' visit, multiple requests will be sent to the server to refresh the map based on individual specifications.  The request will take several seconds to process, but will produce an individualized map based on the criteria set by the user. The mapping environment    Once the entire view has been loaded the user can begin exploring the available data.  On the right side of the screen a list of the visible themes in the view are listed.  In the view several themes may be visible, but only one can be "active."  When the theme is active, the attribute data associated with the geography can be accessed.  The interface is diagrammed below.  In this example, all five themes are visible and none are activated.  To activate a theme, simply bring the pointer to the chosen cell under the "active" theme. The left side of the screen houses a variety of tools that assist in navigation.  The functions of these tools are listed belowViewing multi-media portion of the GIS  Individual web pages have been constructed for each "Clelia" submersible dive that was conducted during the Islands in the Stream Expedition in 2001.  The web pages contain photos and videos of habitat from the dives.  Accessing these dives requires the use of the zoom tool to concentrate on a specific region.  The zoom tool will change the scale of the view, allowing the dive video icon to become visible.  Once the icon is visible, select the icon using the select by rectangle tool (click and drag over the icon).  The link to the appropriate web page will appear in the lower portion of your screen.  Clicking the link will activate the user's default browser and the web page will load automatically.  At this point, the photos are available for viewing and links to the videos are located to the left.  The user must have media software to view these files.
