AREA OF DEGREE CONVERSION TO CIP 2000 STANDARD
SUMMER 2004

Background Area of Degree is maintained by Academic Affairs and Human Resources on screen 23 in HRS.  For the Personnel Data File (reported to Office of the President every fall), Institutional Research reports the area of degree for Employees.  Up until this year, HEGIS Codes (DEG_MJR_FIELD EA FILE SCREEN 23) or CIP Codes (CIP CD FIELD EA FILE SCREEN 23) have been accepted by the Office of the President as valid values; however, for the next Personnel Data File, we must only use CIP codes from the CIP 2000 Standard.  The following two items, to be implemented by Applications Services the first week of August, will accomplish this task:

(1)  DROP LIST OF VALUES FOR CIP CODE   The number of CIP 2000 Codes exceeds the system limit of 999.

(2)  BATCH CONVERSION TO CIP 2000   Applications Services has composed a program to convert the HEGIS and obsolete CIP codes to the CIP 2000 Standard.  Institutional Research has provided two crosswalks,  HEGIS TO CIP 2000  and  OBSOLETE CIP TO CIP 2000,  to be used in accomplishing the conversion.  These crosswalks were based on crosswalks provided by NCES (National Center for Education Statistics) at http://nces.ed.gov/pubs2002/cip2000/

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USERS THAT MAINTAIN EDUCATION DATA ON
SCREEN  23

After items (1) and (2) above are implemented, the users from Academic Affairs and Human Resources will enter the area of degree in the CIP CODE field onlyIt is no longer necessary to enter the HEGIS Code.   This CIP CODE must be a value from the CIP 2000 Family.  Since a list of lookup values will no longer exist, the user must look up the value from another resource.  Below are instructions for using the NCES website and the UNCW  OIR website.

NCES  The user may look up values at the NCES website http://nces.ed.gov/pubs2002/cip2000/ .  At this website, the first two links are suggested, where one can select from a list of categories or search on a text string.

Example Using Drop Down List of Categories   To find an area of degree for computer science, click on link for "List CIP Codes by 2 Digit Series".  Select  "(11)  Computer and Information Sciences and Support Services".  Click  GO.  You may select from the list of 6 Digit Codes.  The CIP 2000 Code for a general computer science degree is 11.0101.  Check the text to make sure this code has not been moved or deleted.  Throw out the "."  And enter 110101 in the CIP Code field on screen 23.

Example using text lookup   To find a degree for American History, click on link "Full Text Search of CIP 2000".  Enter "American" in first box.  Click the radio button "and".  Enter "History" in second box.  A list of CIP 2000 Codes will be returned.  The CIP 2000 Code for "American History (United States)" is 54.0102.  Check the text to make sure this code has not been moved or deleted.  Throw out the "."  And enter 540102 in the CIP Code field on screen 23.

UNCW Office of Institutional Research (OIR)

OIR has generated tables that may also be helpful in finding a CIP 2000 Code:

CIP 2000 CODES SORTED BY CIP CODE
CIP 2000 CODES SORTED BY CIP TITLE

Also provided are crosswalks for reference:

Crosswalk HEGIS to CIP 2000 SORTED BY HEGIS CODE
Crosswalk HEGIS to CIP 2000 SORTED BY HEGIS TITLE
Crosswalk OBSOLETE CIP TO CIP 2000 SORTED BY OLD CIP CODE
Crosswalk OBSOLETE CIP TO CIP 2000 SORTED BY OLD CIP TITLE

Hardcopy Manual

The user may also use the paper manual titled "Classification of Instructional Programs:  2000 Edition"  also provided by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).

Results from Test Run of Batch Job to Convert HEGIS and Obsolete CIP to CIP 2000

I have included links to the summary results for the test run on the HRS Test System in July, 2004.  The column titled "Count" contains the count of areas of degrees that were converted for an HEGIS or obsolete CIP.  The column titled "Source" indicates whether the crosswalk was obtained by NCES or had to be created manually by UNCW.
