Water Works @ UNC Wilmington, UNC Wilmington’s summer enrichment programming for GEAR UP NC, introduced the university’s marine and environmental education program to rising 9th and 10th grade students from across the state. Collaborations with Marine Quest provided morning hands-on lab experiences as well as a kayaking adventure along coastal North Carolina.
Students later combined the knowledge gained during the morning outdoor activities with their independent research and group discussions, to prepare environmental education projects. Throughout the 4-day experience, UNCW Seahawk Specialists facilitated group sessions, reinforced the importance of higher education and discussed educational opportunities available at UNC Wilmington. The team presented their work during the closing ceremony to family members, GEAR-UP Coordinators and very supportive Seahawk community members.
